Help victims of the Manaro volcano in Vanuatu

The repatriation and resettlement of the residents of the island of Ambae in Vanuatu continues following the volcanic activity that has affected the island since September last year.

Anglican Overseas Aid has launched an appeal to help the people of Ambae and the Anglican Church in recovery efforts.

Many communities have already left Ambae, and schools have been closed and evacuated in order to prevent further disruption to education on the island of Ambae.

Thousands of people have also been forced to seek shelter in evacuation centres, living in limbo for months as they wait for the government to arrange for resettlement lands on neighbouring islands.

Most people have lost their livelihoods, and some families’ land has forever been altered due to the change in volcanic environment. This loss of community and place, the uncertainty of their fate and the ongoing rumblings, ash and acid rain from the volcano are producing stress, anxiety and trauma on a scale that is overwhelming any formal support services as families try to decide whether to stay or leave and set up their new homes/land on Ambae or on other islands.

Your continuing support to ease this suffering will help us reach thousands of people.

Our partner in Vanuatu, the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM), is now hosting hundreds of displaced students and teachers in temporary classrooms and accommodation, while planning a long term solution for the relocation of St Patrick’s College, the most senior education institution on Ambae.

The Vanuatu government has limited resources and capacity in the impacted areas and communities expect the Church to respond. ACOM is responding but needs more support and has requested assistance from all their partners to help.

What your donations will provide

Your donations to this appeal will support ongoing relief efforts, including the provision of accommodation for students and teaching staff, school kits, food kits, dignity kits, psychological first aid and counselling, community leadership summits and peacebuilding, as well as support ACOM in relocating its schools.
